The Island cleans up

We have been cleaning up our own roadsides together every spring going back 50 years. This year about 80 islanders met at the Grange Hall, joined one of twelve crews, and jumped in the back of pickup trucks to scour the ditches for litter.

Lummi Island Community Association (LICA) has sponsored the effort since its founding in 1966. LICA provides the food, Lummi Island Grange hosts the venue and prepares the free lunch, with Public Works Road Department supplying bags and hauling it all off to the dump.

This year, special bags were introduced to sort out recyclables.

In the 41 years that Paul Davis had been doing this, clean up day has never been rained out. "Everybody had a good time visiting with friends while doing something really worth the effort."
