Sculpture Woods adds a local steward

In 2017 Ann Morris, her son Brook Morris, and daughter Clea Costa Van Voorhis generously gifted the Sculpture Woods grounds and Studio to the Western Washington University Foundation for use by the WWU College of Fine and Performing Arts. There 16 large bronze sculptures by Ann Morris stand in the beautifully groomed forest.

Kim Obbink to steward Sculpture Woods

Island resident and artist Kim Obbink is now the on-island Steward of Sculpture Woods, on behalf of Ann and of Western Washington University. Western is delighted to have an island resident, in addition to Ann, to help us be responsible and communicative members of your very special community.

Western intends to use Sculpture Woods as an active learning and collaborative space, complementary to the spirit of the property Ann created while also supportive of the mission of the university. The university’s Western Gallery, whose purpose is to collect, exhibit and preserve visual arts, will use Sculpture Woods to further encourage use of these works for educational and research purposes. Western also intends to use the property for visiting artists, special events such as art viewings and recitals, and other small events as appropriate.

Sculpture Woods remains Ann’s private space and working studio, but she has graciously offered to allow the College to use the space from time to time for student and faculty events. These events will be small and private, respecting Ann’s privacy and the privacy and peacefulness of Lummi Island.
