Launching the Reefnet Gears

Lummi Island Wild has launched their reefnet gears in preparation for the 2015 salmon season. Now that the fourth gear has been fitted with solar panels, the Co-op’s entire fleet is completely powered by the sun. The co-op is dedicated to sustainable fishing, one of the only companies that handles their fish from saltwater to freezer to shipping.

The reefnet launch is a local rite. The boats are lifted from blocks, towed on rails over Legoe Bay Road, and let into the water. Lummi Island Wild operates four of the eight gears that will eventually take their positions in the bay.

Earlier in July the F/V Galactic Ice, Lummi Island Wild’s brand new tender, launched from Mavrik Marine in La Conner. And while everything is launching, why not launch a new website too… check out all the great photos and news at LummiIslandWild.com. Best wishes for a great reefnet season!
