Raquel in Paraguay Hospital

Update September 5, 2015:
Raquel finally made it back home to Lummi Island this past week. She couldn’t be happier to be back home.

Over $90,109 was donated for Raquel's medical expenses.

There has been a terrible accident. While out for a run Raquel was hit by a drunk driver during her visit to Paraguay, South America.

The driver fled.

Her fiance Blaine Wetzel reports Raquel’s condition is now stable, but she incurred many serious injuries including over 20 fractures shattering both legs, all the ribs and her shoulder on one side, with significant organ damage. She has undergone one surgery and has four more scheduled in the coming weeks.

Raquel had no insurance at the time of the accident and the medical expenses are substantial. So a fundraiser has been set up on GiveForward. As of March 6, over $47,000 of the $85,000 goal has been raised.

The Willows Inn will be hosting two dinners featuring recipes from Raquel’s mother. Blaine hopes this will be a fun event for all of us who love Raquel and want to support her. Any and all are welcome on Monday, March 30 and Monday, April 13. No reservation is required.

Blaine writes, “I can’t thank everyone enough for the overwhelming love and support, Raquel gets all of your notes and she is so uplifted and encouraged by all the people that care for her.”

We are all looking forward to Raquel’s return to Lummi Island when she can finish her recuperation. Full recovery will take about a year.
